Introduction
The Japan Bridging Scholarships, funded by the U.S.–Japan Bridging Foundation and administered via the American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ), empower American undergraduate students to study abroad in Japan for a semester or academic year through meaningful cultural immersion and financial support.
About the Scholarship
Established in 1999, the program has supported over 2,000 students from diverse academic backgrounds. Recipients called Bridging Scholars join a cohort supported by structured programming, mentorship, and networking opportunities to foster long-term global engagement with Japan.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen enrolled in an undergraduate program in the U.S. before and during the study-abroad period.
- Any major is eligible; Japanese language proficiency is not required.
- Study abroad must be for at least three months (semester or academic year) with transferable credit.

- Semester award: $2,500 cash stipend
- Academic-year award: $4,500 cash stipend.
